![]() The Museum of the Broads moves to Stalham
The picture (right) shows the buildings in their original state and during the coming seasons, they will be developed into an integrated museum site. Two plans are currently being considered, the final development will depend on funds and grants as available. The buildings housing the collection have strong connections with the wherry trade of years ago, and are quite fascinating in themselves. There are even stories of smuggling from the coast at Horsey and Waxham. For the first time the Museum will have its own private moorings enabling some boats in the collection to be seen and enjoyed afloat, adding a new dimension to the displays.
Watch a video telling the history of the Broads before seeing the displays depicting how the origins of the Broads were discovered, from the peat diggers in the 13th and 14th centuries up to the modern hire boat industry of today, the story of St Benets Abbey, the only one in the country not dissolved by Henry VIII and information on people connected with the Broads like naturalist Arthur Patterson. Also on display is "the last Coypu, a 21lb pike and tools from the traditional Broads industries. Photographs, books and important documents are all housed at the Museum and being added to all the time.
