All a-Broad for Stalham's success
(extracts from the North Norfolk District Council's newsletter)

New bridgeWhen the Stalham Regeneration Initiative was launched a little more than a year ago (see press release below), it promised to breathe renewed life into the Broads market town and its surrounding area - and it's proving to be as good as its word. Through the efforts of local people, exciting and innovative projects are springing up around Stalham and beginning to revitalise all aspects of commercial and community life. (Left - the new bridge from the Staithe car park to the path into town.)

With many more schemes and ideas in the pipeline, Stalham is, indeed regeneration, and, though there is still much work to be done, the local community is now far better prepared to confront the changes and meet the many real challenges that lie ahead. The new Initiative is plainly working, and it's working because it was wanted, triggered and shaped by th people of Stalham.

New bridgeEvery year, some 20,000 boating holiday-makers join The Broads via Stalham's boatyards and thousands more sail or motor along the river to the Staithe, but not enough of them venture across the A149 to explore Stalham, or perhaps are even aware that the town exists and is just a short walk away. (Right - another view of the new bridge showing the newly dredged and cleaned out dyke in which the ducks have already taken up residence.)

Not only does the main road effectively cut the town off from the Broads, Stalham Staithe itself is confusing, unattractive and unweilcoming and does little to encourage visitors to stay or take a look around th area.

All that, however, is about to change. Indeed, work has already started on a schem to enhance the Staithe and provide visitors with clear information about the town and the many facilities, amenities, shops and services it offers. Along with noticeboards, maps, signposts and newly railed footpaths on the Staithe, ramps will be provided at the A149 crossing to make access into Stalham a lot easier and ssfer for everyone.

New lightingDesigned and organised by the Broads Authority, with support from the Rural District Council, the Town Council, North Norfolk District Council and boatyard and landowners, the scheme is being carried out by local craftsmen, using local goods - and it will be in keeping with the image and attractiveness of the Broads. (Left - new lighting being installed on the main path from the staithe into town.)

All in all, the completed project will benefit everyone. Visitors will leave with happier memories, shops and retaurants will see more business and local residents will have the pleasure of a much-improved facility, right on their doorstep.

NEWS RELEASE

NORTH NORFOLK DISTRICT COUNCIL
26th May 1998

£20,000 AGREED TOWARDS STALHAM FACE-LIFT

New bridgeThe first major projects in the regeneration of Stalham can begin, after the Rural Development Commission agreed a £20,000 grant on Friday, 15 May.

The money will go towards improving the look of Stalham Town Centre and Staithe area, with landscaping and architectural features, better information and signing for visitors, and improving links between the Town Centre and the Staithe. (Right - Stalham Staithe from the path into town, the Musuem of the Broads new site is background right .)

Funding for the £47,000 enhancement project part of the Stalham Regeneration Partnership will also be coming from North Norfolk District Council, Norfolk County Council, Stalham Town Council, and the Broads Authority (who are taking the project forward in the Staithe area).

    Planned improvements include:
  • Stalham Staithe environmental enhancements
  • new litter bins
  • period railings
  • cycle stands
  • church floodlighting
  • signposts and noticeboards for both visitors and the local community
  • ramps at the crossing of the main A149 road

John Mullen, North Norfolk District Council s Economic Projects Officer, said: This is a major step forward for the Stalham regeneration initiative.

It will improve the environment in Stalham for the local community and for visitors, and strengthen the local economy by making things more attractive and bringing more people into Stalham.

Work is scheduled to take place over the next six months, and follows on from Norfolk County Council s street improvements which finished early this year.

North Norfolk Councillor for Stalham, Mick French, said: After some years of hard work by North Norfolk District Council, local County Councillor Sheila Cullingham, and myself, it is tremendous to see the regeneration project under way.
